Bethan has a busy junior employment and personal injury practice. She is currently seeking to develop her work in inquests, clinical negligence and education law.

Bethan joined Chambers in 2020 following the successful completion of her pupillage under the supervision of Elizabeth Hodgson and Dominic Bayne.

Bethan graduated from Newcastle University in 2016 with first class honours and went on to complete the BPTC in Leeds, gaining outstanding grades in a number of modules. In 2018 Bethan graduated from UCL with an LLM (distinction). Bethan focussed her LLM on international law and whilst studying advised clients in immigration and asylum matters. Bethan’s LLM thesis analysed the relationship between the provision of abortion and the European Charter of Human Rights, a response to the Supreme Court decision of In Re Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission [2018] UKSC 27. During her masters year Bethan worked pro-bono for a number of charities completing family reunification applications.

Prior to commencing pupillage, Bethan worked as a County Court Advocate: taking instructions from clients in a range of civil matters including infant approvals, landlord and tenant disputes and bankruptcy proceedings.

Bethan has a particular interest in personal injury, clinical negligence and employment law.

Bethan has a very busy junior employment practice and  accepts instructions from both claimants and respondents in final and preliminary hearings. As well as a busy tribunal practice, Bethan frequently drafts pleadings and advises in a wide range of employment matters.

Bethan has advised and acted in a breadth of claims, including those pertaining to:

  • Strike out applications, including a recent successful strike out of a whistleblowing claim pertaining to over 20 PIDs
  • Various forms of direct and indirect discrimination, including failure to make reasonable adjustments and S.15 EQA
  • Victimisation
  • Harassment
  • Unfair dismissal (including constructive dismissal)
  • Breach of contract
  • Unlawful deduction from wages
  • Flexible working applications
  • Redundancy
  • Whistleblowing, both automatic unfair dismissal and detriments, including acting as sole counsel for a Local Authority in a 6 day final hearing
  • Health and Safety cases, including S.100(1)(b),(c),(d) and (e) ERA and S.44 ERA, including cases pertaining to Covid 19 measures and risk assessments
  • Employment status, including issues of personal service companies, IR35, and S.41 EQA

Bethan completed the first three months for her pupillage under the supervision of Elizabeth Hodgson and drafted a wide range of legal documents for clinical negligence matters, including: particulars of claim, defences, advices, and counter-schedules.

Bethan has a growing clinical negligence practice, she has advised in a variety of cases, including those pertaining to;

  • Delayed diagnosis of meningitis
  • Infant injuries caused by missed diagnosis of gestational diabetes
  • Incorrect prescriptions
  • Pressure ulcers

Bethan has a busy personal injury practice and is regularly instructed in a wide range of road traffic accidents, including personal injury claims, credit hire, and LVI cases.

Bethan’s fast track practice also includes employers and public liability claims, where she frequently drafts pleadings, and advises on liability and quantum. Bethan provides clear and succinct advice within short timescales.

Bethan accepts instructions for civil applications and has experience in a wide range of applications, including strike out, set aside, and allocation hearings. Bethan is familiar with the rules of the Low Value Personal Injury Portal and frequently accepts instructions in applications arising from the operation of the Protocol and Practice Direction.

 Bethan has an extensive credit hire practice on behalf of both Claimants and Defendants. Bethan is very familiar with the issues credit hire entails – enforceability, impecuniosity, intervention letters, and generally matters relating to mitigation.
