Sophie Firth

Sophie has an increasingly busy employment practice whilst maintaining a keen interest in personal injury and clinical negligence. She also has particular experience of credit hire.

As of March 2018, Sophie is the editor of the Parklane Plowden Employment Newsletter.

Sophie became a tenant in October 2016. Her pupillage was supervised by James Murphy (personal injury) and Andrew Sugarman (employment and clinical negligence).

Right Arrow

Sophie acts for both Claimants and Respondents and accepts instructions to advise, undertake drafting and attend hearings.

She has experience in the following areas:

  • Unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal.
  • Discrimination (including disability and age).
  • Whistleblowing detriment and automatic unfair dismissal, including assisting Andrew Sugarman in delivering seminars on the topic in 2016 and 2017.
  • Victimisation.
  • Unlawful deductions from wages.
  • Breach of contract.

Sophie also has an understanding of running employment cases from a solicitor’s perspective, having assisted in drafting witness statements in a number cases and advised on disclosure.

In March 2018, Sophie became the editor of the Parklane Plowden Employment Newsletter.

Personal Injury

Sophie is regularly instructed on behalf of Claimants and Defendants to advise, draft pleadings and appear in hearings at all stages of litigation. She deals with cases inside and outside the portals and has a working knowledge of the QOCS and fundamental dishonesty provisions.

She has experience in the following areas:

  • Employers’ liability.
  • Public liability, including highways, occupiers’ liability and defective premises claims.
  • Road traffic accidents, including low-velocity impact and claims against the MIB.
  • Noise-induced hearing loss.

In 2017, Sophie was seconded to the personal injury team at Stewarts Law for a month. She was involved with a number of multi-million-pound catastrophic injury claims concerning brain and spinal injuries. She assisted in drafting Schedules of Loss and witness statements.

Clinical Negligence

Sophie has advised on quantum in a clinical negligence context. She has also provided representation at both pre-inquest review and inquest stage – for further details, please see the ‘Inquests’ section.

Sophie gained a good grounding in this area during pupillage, including in cases involving delayed diagnosis and stillborn babies. She has drafted pleadings and observed conferences with experts.

Having worked as a credit hire paralegal for Lyons Davidson Solicitors before commencing pupillage, Sophie has particular experience in credit hire cases. She now predominantly acts for Defendant insurers and deals with hire cases inside and outside the portal, including the particular procedural issues which arise in the former.

Sophie also has experience of dealing with low-velocity impact cases, including fundamental dishonesty arguments.
